# BOOK CREDITS: the asset pack

Everything you need to put the BOOK CREDITS mark and the credits box into a
book, a web page or a PDF. **Public domain. No licence, no permission, no
attribution.** See `LICENSE.txt`.

You should never have to redraw this mark in CSS or SVG by hand. If a format you
need is missing, ask and it will be added.

## What is in here

**Start with the unsuffixed files.** `bookcredits-roundel.svg` and
`bookcredits-box.svg` are the mark as it stands on bookcredits.org: dark ink with
the red accent rule. If you only take two files, take those.

The suffixed ones exist for cases the default cannot cover:

| Rendition | Use it when |
|---|---|
| *(no suffix)* | **The default.** Any light background, screen or paper. |
| `-mono-onwhite` | Same as the default but the accent rule is ink, not red. For a one-colour job on a light ground. |
| `-black` | Pure `#000000` throughout. Some print shops insist. |
| `-white` | Pure `#FFFFFF`, for a dark background. |
| `-oncream` | The warm cream used on dark book covers. |

Two assets, in each rendition:

- **`bookcredits-roundel-*`** the circular mark. Five squares for the five
  credits. Use it small, from about 15 mm (0.6 in) up.
- **`bookcredits-box-*`** the credits box, naming C, D, M, E and A in full.
  Use it on a copyright page.

Five formats, for each of those:

- **`.svg`** the master. Scales to anything, restyle it if you want.
- **`.png`** at 256, 512, 1024 and 2400 px tall, transparent background.
  This is the one to drag into Word, Pages, InDesign or a web page.
- **`.pdf`** vector, for LaTeX and for print workflows.
- **`.eps`** vector, for older print workflows that still ask for it.

## Dropping it in

**HTML**

```html
<img src="bookcredits-roundel.svg" alt="Book Credits published"
     width="120" height="120">
```

**LaTeX**

```latex
\includegraphics[width=1in]{bookcredits-roundel.pdf}
```

**Word, Pages, Google Docs**

Insert the 1024 px PNG and scale it down. Do not scale a small PNG up; use the
2400 px one if you need it large.

**Print**

Use the PDF or the EPS. Both are vector, so resolution is not a thing you have
to think about. If your printer insists on a raster, send the 2400 px PNG and
place it no larger than 200 mm (8 in) tall.

## The five credits

The standard is five credits, in this order. Give each one honestly, and say
"none" where there was none.

| | Credit | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| **C** | Concept | Whose idea the book was, and what it is for. |
| **D** | Direction | Who decided scope, order, and what stayed and went. |
| **M** | Models | Which AI models did what, named. Drafting, research, code, art. |
| **E** | Editing | Who checked it, and how far. |
| **A** | Art | Who made the pictures, and whether any were model-generated. |

Audiobooks add **N** for Narration.

**A worked example**, from a book that uses this standard:

```
CONCEPT        Joe Kuefler
DIRECTION      Joe Kuefler
MODELS         Claude, by Anthropic. Research synthesis across primary
               sources, most of the drafting, and the code that draws
               every figure.
EDITING        Joe Kuefler, with the model. Every number checked.
ART DIRECTION  Joe Kuefler. Figures are drawn to specification, never
               image-generated.
```

## The one ask

Nothing here is enforceable and nothing is meant to be. But the mark means the
credits are present and complete. **Using it on a book whose credits are not
honest is the only way to break it**, and it would only need to happen a few
times for the mark to stop meaning anything to a reader.

Publish the credits. Then use the mark.
